Vanilla is an ancient flavoring, used by the Aztecs who added it to chocolate. Vanilla is the only member of the orchid family used as food. The part used as a food spice is the unripe fruit which resembles a pod and is commonly referred to as a "bean".
Vanilla is often used in puddings, ice creams, candy and liqueurs. Vanilla extract is made only of vanilla and alcohol. Vanillin a synthetic subsitute is actually more flavorful than true vanilla.
Vanilla is a digestive and stimulant, but in excess it is inflaming and irritating.
